Step-by-Step Guide to Customizing a Back-Tie Dress | Sewing Tutorial

Hello everyone, how are you? Today’s tip is for a simple and cute dress with a back-tie detail inspired by Shein.

For the front pattern, I lowered the neckline by 1.5 cm and adjusted the shoulder by 1.5 cm, leaving the strap 9 cm wide. The armhole adjustment is optional; if you’d like a bit more ease, you can add 0.5 cm. I also added 2 cm at the waist and 10 cm at the hips, raised the hemline by 1 cm, and adjusted everything. You can also connect the armhole to the additional 10 cm at the hips if you want a looser fit, ideal for adding a belt for a more elegant touch. I set the ruffle height at 15 cm, and for gathering, you’ll need to add 75% of the hem measurement. The waist dart was used as ease.

For the armhole adjustment, it’s essential to measure this based on your size. Since I made this in a size GG, I adjusted the armhole by 3 cm, but for a size P, the adjustment is only 1 cm. This variation depends on the size you’re working with. I marked 7 cm below the armhole on the side and drew a line to transfer the adjustment.

Once the adjustment was closed and everything aligned, I repositioned the dart to remove the overlap.

For the back pattern, I lowered the neckline by 17 cm, adjusted the shoulder by 1.5 cm, and left the strap at 9 cm wide. I added 0.5 cm to the armhole and 2 cm at the waist, just like the front. At the hem, I added 10 cm and raised it by 1 cm for alignment. The ruffle height is again 15 cm, and for gathering, it’s the hem measurement plus 75% of its value. The waist dart was used as ease. For the back-tie, I left it 3.5 cm high and 60 cm long.

I tested these measurements in a size GG and was very happy with the result.
